Make sure the room is comfortable i.e. slightly dark maybe a nightlight, warm, play soothing music (CD's)
Make sure the child is comfortable i.e. clean diaper, full stomach, comfortable clothing, pacifier if they need it or a small cuddly/blanket they might like
After doing all of the above place the child into the crib, maybe rub the back or head for a few minutes to calm the child and walk away. Try to be consistent that is very important. If the child cries it's okay unless it they are in a complete tantrum and may get sick on themselves (some babies do this). Good Luck

If you are talking about a newborn with no bad habits established yet, you should start putting the baby down just before the baby falls asleep. If you know the tummy is full and the baby is super sleepy, put it down preferably in the crib but also in a swing or bouncy seat if you like, then don't pick it back up if it cries--you know it's tired and sleepy, it WILL fall asleep in a couple minutes even if it whines a little. However if you are talking about retraining an older baby to fall asleep on it's own, you are dealing with breaking an already established habit (of being manipulated to sleep in whatever way you've been doing it) and it will be much more painful to you--you must put the baby down when you know it's full and sleepy, and then LET IT CRY till it goes to sleep no matter how long it takes. Do NOT reward the crying by going back in. It won't take more than a week, two at the most, before baby is retrained.

My little girl is 15 months old. She started going to sleep by herself like a month and a half ago. I had to put her in her room alone and let her cry. You don't have to let them cry all night. Decide how long you can go hearing them cry and that'll be your limit, for me it was 10-15 minutes. Start off with like 2-3 minutes go in and check on them but DON"T PICK THEM UP!! Keep doing it until they are asleep. The next night increase the time. Keeping going until they can be put in their rrom and fall asleep without you going in at all.

there is a method to use that worked for me. When they cry, dont immediately go to them to comfort them. They have to learn to comfort themselves. I think you start doing this at 6 month so their stomachs are bigger so they dont wake up to eat as often. Start with letting them cry for 5 minutes, go comfort them but dont pick them up, then every 10 minutes, and so on. It worked for my son and he eventually slept through the night when I didnt go in to pick him up every time he cried. It is hard at first but you need to stick with it. The baby will learn to comfort himself.
My son has one of those fish aquarium music players attached to his crib. He is almost 2 1/2 and he still uses it to fall asleep.

Lay them down in their crib or in bed with mom and rub their back when they are asleep. Gradually start rubbing their back less and less until they are able to go to bed by themselves.
I would never let my baby cry it out. What happens if you were upset and someone just left you to cry it out.

Let him/her cry until he/she goes to sleep. In 5 days, he/she will be in the habit.

Make sure they are as comfortable as they can be and don't take them up when they cry.
