people say the universe is expanding.....can it keep doing so indefinately.....after all there is nothin that is providing a centrifugal force that will keep the various bits of matter in th universe in orbit...and since black holes are only part of a single galaxy ....it dosent seemt o me that they could provide this centripetal force

this is actually a common misconception about the big bang. the universe is finite yet has no boundary and no center. it may be something like the two dimensional surface of a sphere. nothing inside or outside the sphere exists for the surface. space-time originated in the big bang. the whole universe was the big bang, and everywhere in the universe was once the big bang. there is no "outside". to quote a dead writer, "there is no there, there".

Try not to thing of the universe of having borders. Try instead to see that there are things that we don't yet fully understand. The relationship that matter has with all other matter is one of those things. What scientists are starting to believe more and more is that everything is moving outward into complete void. But everything is connected so there is stress constantly being aplied to these bonds. At some point in time, these bonds will do one of two things. They will either snap and the galaxies will continue to plumet endlessly into nothingness, OR these bonds will pull the galaxies back toward each other until the condense into sigularity. After this happens, the bang repeats itself and the cycle starts over until the former of the outcomes occur.

What we believe now is,
That the universe exists in only its own space time continuum. Time has no meaning outside the continuum we live in. Beyond our universe there is no space, outside of it the term space has no meaning. The universe is expanding but it is not expanding into anything. As it expands, space expands. If the universe ever started to contract, then space would contract.

I know it is a hard concept and as humans we don't really like it. You could say there is a border, all matter, all the universe, all space is contained within that border. There is nothing beyond it.

but the boundary condition is that there is no boundary.

My opinion: the universe has stronger interior itself because it began. This boom includes more beneficial than 3 spatial dimensions. the three dimensional area we journey is purely component of the universe and is its increasing area, somewhat like the exterior of an increasing balloon is the increasing fringe of the balloon. there is no end of the exterior of a balloon. you could go back and forth on the exterior continually and not in any respect locate an end or area. you would even come through the position the position you began, per chance many circumstances. If the balloon is increasing, each and every time you are available the course of your starting off factor, or close to it, it ought to have taken longer. it isn't increasing into more beneficial balloon. somewhat the balloon itself is increasing and its floor has no end notwithstanding it truly is increasing. the three dimensional component of the universe that we may be able to work out and journey IS its area. This area has no end yet is increasing.

I still contend that the universe is constructed in a "spherical" manner. Meaning, if you travel far enough, you will end up at the same spot you started, like following the equator of the earth. Thus, expansion will ultimately lead to perceived contraction where everything will collide at the other end.

My science teacher said that there will be a 'rubber band' effect. It means that the universe will keep stretching, and then will, someday, reach the expanse that it can reach, and fire back at itself. If that happens, the whole universe will collapse on itself.

The universe ends right at the edge of infinity, after that, you fall
into the abyss of today.

No--there is no edge or border. If there were------there would still be the other side of the edge.........even if there were "nothingness" on the other side. Boggles my mind when I think about it. *ahhhhh.....now I'll be thinking about it again!*

The universe is finite and unbounded. There is no border, no edge, and it is not infinite.

If there is an edge or a border then we don't know about it.
