How can I tell when my guppy is going to have her babies? I'm pretty sure it's going to be very soon, any signs I can watch for?

She will be of course very large. Often people observe that she will have a more "squared off" appearance to her belly or that she seems to be hiding more than usual. There is no clear cut signs, but watching for these things may give you a clue. Best thing is to get her in a tank to herself several days ahead of time. the tank should also provide lots of cover and hiding placces for the babies as she will try to eat them as soon as they are born.

When she is real fat make sure you have leaves or something for the babies to hide by or other guppies in the tank will eat the babies and I would separate the mother there are small cages you can buy, or you can put her in her own tank. Also make sure you have a big tank if your going to keep the babies. I had a 10 gallon tank with three guppies two females and one male within a matter of months I had over 100 guppies they like to have sex a lot lol. They eventually started dying off and I had to give them away.

Look at the area just above the female's vent, you will see a lighter colored area.(Called the gravid spot.) Watch this area and you will see the fry developing inside. When you can see the eyes of the fry in this spot, the time is near. Don't try to move the female if you can see these eye-spots. Female live-bearers should not be netted two weeks before birthing. Provide a lot of bunch or floating plants for the fry to hide in and just let nature take it's course.(This may involve some eating of the fry,but if there are enough hiding places in the aquarium, most will survive.)

They may pick on him a little, but after a couple days, they will get used to him and won't bother him anymore. Most of my adult guppies don't even eat the newborn fry. Good luck!

When your guppy is ready to have her babies, her gravid spot (the dark spot close to her anus) will get darker. She also will look so fat, like she's ready to explode. Also, a female close to giving birth will likely refuse to eat. They may even pace up and down the sides of the tank, or hide in plants or at the bottom. She may also point her head down when she's ready to deliver.

Good luck!

The fish will not swim around much and will stay in a secluded part where the plants are. The best thing to do is to put her into a breeding trap so she doesn't eat the newborn fry. She won't eat while she is getting ready to give birth and will be hungry when she delivers.

The female will have a very red back-end and will be trying to hide out in plants. They usually have them at night. In one year I had over 500 fry, after starting with just one male and female. I have also had females change sex to male when I removed all males from the tank.
