Julius Caesar was the first known Italian to have landed in England on the beach at Deal near Dover in c55BC. The next wave of Italians came in about c40AD. Things started to look up. Gone was the English greasy spoon cafe to be replaced by the pizza parlour and the pasta restauranti. We all got fat. Next came an army of ice cream vans [I screema, you screema, we all screema together]. Yum. Before Italian icecream in UK we ate something called iced lollies usually made with cheap ingreadients and of course, ice. The Italians changed all that. They gave us ripple effect icecreams. We all got fat.

In London, there has been a large Italian community for maybe over two hundred years. I've met Italians here in London who don't even speak Italian because their great grandfather came and they're descended from him and his wife. They have little or no connection with Italy apart from an Italian name.

Italians can come to England any time they like. They're always welcome. Here in London, where we pride ourselves on being an historic Roman city, the Italians are very welcome indeed. Just wish they would open more cafes, restaurants and takeaways etc. It's an uphill fight against the likes of Starbucks - who I hope will just drop dead one day soon.
