What would be the average salary for a British secretary for example, and a factory worker, and how much of that salary would pay for housing, food, etc. Thanks

I'm a receptionist and I earn about £11, 000 pa, if I lived on my own I'd be paying about £700 a month on bills and rent, not to mention other expenses like car and going out. Luckily I live with my boyfriend who is a lorry driver, he earns £20, 000 pa, but we often still end up with more month than money!

The pound is half the dollar, not twice. So if you are hoping to convert money dollar-pound the exchange rate is awful.

I always find that the price of things in the UK is the same but as the equvilent in the US. So say something costs £10 in the UK, it usually seems to cost $10 in the US so i think for a British person, everything in the US is much cheaper, but for a US person everything in Britain is much more expensive. Just a personal opinion though from what I've observed.

Sorry i don't know about salaries. Perhaps looking on UK job sites though will give you a good idea. Just search on the UK yahoo for jobs. You could also look at say the Asda and Tesco websites (supermarkets) for idea's on food prices and housing website (again just search in yahoo) for some idea of that.

House prices have risen 140% since 1997.
Wages a mere 22%.

So at the moment, unless you are the CEO of some company, house buying is tough.

And the government still insists on rising taxes, putting more financial strain on people.

We all live in gold houses and eat gold food and sleep in gold beds.
