A young man named Ethan was in his late teens. He was excited about a trip he was going to take during spring break to Miami. He had always wanted to go somewhere without his parents while on a break from school. He and his friends were talking about it while they were walking downtown in the small town where they lived. When they were about to walk around the corner of the next block a man stepped out in front of them wearing a tattered coat. He was old, probably in his late sixties with white hair and a long repulsive looking nose. His pale white skin and eerie grey eyes sent a chill up Ethan's spine. "Don't go," the man said, "you will regret it." He didn't say anything else, just pushed us to the side and walked between us, coughing as if he had lung cancer. Could he be talking about spring break, Ethan wondered. He barely gave it a second thought and he went about his normal daily routine.

In a few months Ethan along with three other friends he had from school were having the time of their lives on the beaches of Miami. There were young girls everywhere and no one to tell him what to do. He was underage, but found a young irresponsible man to give he and his friends some alcohol. They partied all day in the sun, enjoying a day without worry and without any inhibitions. Ethan and his friends were drunk and ready to pass out. They did not realize the effect the sun had on a person that had been drinking. Still, they were faced with a dilemma because they all wanted to get back to the hotel. One of Ethan's friends named Rick said he didn't feel that bad and tried to drive the two miles back to their hotel. They didn't make it half way and they were in a terrible accident which killed a young woman and her baby. Two of his friends were in serious condition and the driver of the vehicle he was in was shuddering in shock and trepidation. Ethan sat next to the car in horror. A voice from the past kept going through his head, 'Don't go, you will regret it,' the voice repeated over and over. He looked up. And there, to his astonishment, stood the man in the tattered coat who had warned him about going on the trip earlier that week.

Say it Explain it Repeat it You want to start your essay with a grabbing intro. A lot of vivid words can only help you. And just because it is an informative essay doesn't mean you can't make it interesting. Example: if you are asked to explain how your family has influenced who you are, you can start your essay with saying in a couple of sentences something like a memory, and then go into your thesis statement. Your thesis statement should include what you are going to talk about. A thesis statement should be written in 1-2 sentences. Throughout the body of your essay stories relating to the topic can only help strengthen your essay. A lot of instructors remind their students that they are helpful when you might not know what to say. And, again, use vivid words. You want to paint a picture in your readers head. Anybody can write an essay, but the ones that stick out are usually the ones with the better outcome, whether it be a good grade or admission to the college of your choice. The conclusion is basically restating and summarizing everything you just wrote. You're probably going to say your thesis statement again in this paragraph. And you're going to want to use a ending sentence that will leave an impression on your reader. The beginning and ending are the things that people will remember most about your essay, so make it good. Remember: An essay is usually 5 paragraphs; however, a 4 paragraph essay can be just as strong. If you plan to write your essay in 4 paragraphs your 2 paragraph body needs to be just as strong if not stronger than if it were 3 paragraphs.

First describe your character briefly. What kind of person is he? Note, I said "briefly" because you mentioned that this was a 400word essay. What was the destination of the trip? How did he encounter the man in the tattered coat before the trip and toward the ending? Was there a reason for the warning? Was there danger in the place he was headed ? If so, how does the tattered coated man find out and come to his rescue? Why did he disregard the warning? Perhaps add a bit of conversation, if you are able in the story.

Hope this helps

Write about someone who went on a "trip to the past." Maybe that person rode on a time machine or something, and tried to change something about his past. Then he realizes that there are consequences to what he did. And when he returns to the present, he sees the man in the tattered coat who told him not to go on that trip.

Maybe a man was going on a trip to something important (meeting his lover, getting a new job, seeing his family)
The fellow in the tattered coat told him not to go.

The man intended to go but some outside force prevents him from going.

The plane he planned to take crashes and kills everyone. (maybe his gf or parents were on board)

He's at the wreckage and t hat's when "He looked up..blah blah"

There is a great story about a man driving across the U.S. and continually seeing the same man everywhere he goes. The man seems to be following him and no matter how fast the driver goes, the man is always ahead of him.

The man is symbolic of death and the driver realizes he is dead when the driver calls his mother and is not heard.

Make it your own, but you could use this as a premise.

Use your imagination! Maybe make it out to be that this character had a nightmare and that's how he woke up.
