you need to give this to someone who can look at the motherboard to see how much RAM (and what kind) it will support. There are small computer shops all over - go to one of them and have them open it up and help you out.

I would suggest buying 2 512MB ram.
To know what kind of hardwares you are using, there are basically two ways. The first way is to check it without opening the case, just like what you did. But some hardware, like the powersupply or the cpu fan cannot be checked without opening the case. Another way is to open the case and look inside. But since you said you know nothing about computer hardwares, I would suggest you bring your computer to some computer shops and ask for help.

upgrade memory to 1 gb by fitting 2 x512mb as you are taking the 256mb out anyway ,remove it and take it along to the pc shop as well as the details from belarc advosor (print them) and they will be able to make sure you have the correct memory for your system. many of the online memory sellers such as crucial will do an online scan on your system and advise exactly what memory you need, and they are cheaper than the local guys in the shops.good luck.

... you're no longer likely to have the skill to enhance it, only provided that's outfitted on an historical motherboard. i will assure you that whether lots money you spend buying out-of-production aspects that have compatibility will certainly construct a sparkling equipment which will outperform it quite. we are speaking like $4 hundred, perchance much less. to place it into perspective: you have a single-middle processor with 750MHz. industry standards are for twin-middle processors each and each with over 2000MHz clock speeds. you have 64MB of RAM. present day industry standards are for ~2000MB of RAM, minimum. you have a 30 gigabyte puzzlingcontinual. the common laptop puzzlingcontinual is easily over 100GB in length. you have a CD-ROMcontinual. maximum desktops have DVD-ROM familiar, if no longer large-Multi (DVD burners). you have a video card with 8MB of VRAM. standards for dedicated enjoying cards are around 512MB those days. and ultimately... modems are not from now on, incredibly. in case you're nonetheless employing this, I congratulate you on your endurance, whether it's time to go on. If it incredibly is in trouble-free terms a working laptop or workstation you present day in a nook someplace (and it hasn't had any utilization), i'm afraid that's woefully old.

Take it to a shop, you need to show it to a computer expert. He can tell you better about which RAM you should use and else.
