based purely on public opinion and poll results?

If they made their decisions based upon what the people truly wanted...and sincerely followed through...then you would truly have a 'man of the people'. But if their campaign is designed to appease the masses, and lacks commitment in follow through...you are stuck with what we have today - people who will make promises with no intent to fulfill them.

People need to make a stand on what they believe to be the best course of action for the country. And then they need to stick to their convictions. That, alone, would stand out in a crowd. Today, politicians are far too influenced by poll numbers and public opinion. The notion that people have to register for one party or another in order to vote, for example, is ridiculous. Its not necessary in other countries, and the only purpose I can see is so that polls can be conducted.

If you wish to have a true democracy, this would be a good way (although why use politicians? You could simply have all decisions made by poll). Democracies are generally a poor form of government, though, BECAUSE of exactly that. In a Republican form of government - such as the US -- we elect representatives who we feel will make reasoned decisions on our behalf. The Constitution of the US was specifically constructed with staggered terms for Senate, House and Executive precisely to dampen the sudden lurches of popular opinion. Twenty-five years ago polls would show that people thought we were entering a dangerous new ice age. What do you think they would show today? In another 25 years?

The pros is it would be 100% representation of the public's will as stated. The con is that sometimes the public's will may be counter productive to the public welfare.
