That sounds like some thing the Dalai Lama would say. It means that if make an enemy your friend you have ultimatly destroyed the ultimate feeling of anger and found compassion and understanding.
It is a very powerful statement. One to meditate on.

By befriending someone they are no longer your enemy. You have gotten rid of or "destroyed" the enemy part of that person.

Alfred the Great of England was one who practiced that. After winning battles against the Danes who invaded his land, he then worked for them and with them, teaching them, giving them presents and even adopting the leader as his godson. He defeated his enemies in battle, but he destroyed them by making them his friends. It's part of the reason he's the only English ruler known as "the Great".

If they are your friend then they are no longer your enemy and the enemy no longer exists or is "Destroyed".

it means rather than fight with someone --- get to know them find a common ground --- respect each others opinion and when it is over rather than an enemy you have a friend
