If so do you suggest having this done? Was there any harm to you or your baby?

At 36 weeks I found out my son was breech, at that point I was told that external version would be extremely painful and most likely ineffective in moving the baby. I am a very thin framed person and my Dr told me that I didn't have enough fluid around the baby allow for movement, so I had a scheduled c-section at 38 weeks. There is some risk involved and generally I don't think it's used much anymore. In my opinion, it's better safe than sorry when it comes to my angel :)

I would suggest trying some other things first.

Are you going breech tilts? Put heat on your pelvis and ice on your fundus while doing it.

Have you tried doing shoulder stands? (That's what got my breech to turn around 38 weeks.)

Consider seeing a chiropractor who is trained in the Webster Technique. This is gentler than an external version and has a very high success rate.

If those things don't work, then I'd consider a version. Make sure you are very well hydrated prior to the appointment as it will make things easier.

If a doctor knows what he/she is doing it's very easy and harmless. just make sure you see an experienced doctor. I've never heard of anything bad happening from the procedure. I HAVE heard of the baby being turned the right way, then going back to breech!!! Some babies are just stubborn that way ;o)

It's really not a big deal, relax and laugh your way through it. You'll be fine and so will the baby.
