I would agree with teddie it would depend on how much you want to spend on repairs clutch have a pretty descent life 2-3 years maybe longer and the expense is cheap 200-300 and thats for name brand clutches like ACT or Clutchmaster for whole kits, where as in an automatic if your automatic transmission was to go out it can cost 1000 dollars or more and more is likely what you are looking at depending on the age of the vehicle. I drive a 5 spd 07 Scion and i dont mind you get a little bit better gas mileage in a 5 spd not alot 2-3mpg per gallon, but i love driving a manual. I think most of the time it is up to the driver if you dont like shifting gears get an automatic if you dont mid and you like it or enjoy it get a manual.

Ten or fifteen years ago I would have said go with the standard. But automatic transmissions have come a long way. With proper maintenance your automatic will outlast the clutch in your standard many times over, especially in heavy stop & go city and urban traffic. Out on the open road its a toss up. Its a matter of personal preference. But in the city and constant congestion, go with the automatic. Just check around first. Don't settle for a model that has known problems or deficiencies. Ask a mechanic who you trust and has been around a while before you settle on a certain car.

The automatic would be better. In the city, with a manual you are CONSTANTLY changing gears, which means you are constantly wearing down the clutch plate. In the long run, the clutch plate will wear out first. Clutch vehicles are good if you are hauling heavy loads. Clutches are also from an age where there were no automatic transmissions then.

An automatic transmission would be more appropriate for a crowded city like NYC because you have constant stop-go traffic. If you drive a manual in such traffic, you are going to be slipping the clutch more, which wears down the friction material. Doing this constantly will cause your clutch to wear out prematurely.

I don't know about durability, but it seems to me if you're in a crowded city an automatic transmission might be more practical. You know ,not having to bother with the clutch and all.

Generally speaking, automatic transmissions tend to last longer. Using a manual transmission in heavy traffic, with lots of stop and go, will wear out your clutch pretty quickly. The good thing is that clutches are relatively inexpensive to fix. Automatic transmissions tend to last much longer but cost a LOT more to fix when they eventually die.
