Amniotic fluid smells completely different than urine. It is also clear. I would say try going to the bathroom, while you are in there try doing a Kiegel or two (flex the muscle you use when you REALLY have to pee badly and have to hold it) if the flow stops I would say it's probablely urine, if not then it's amniotic fluid. If you still cannot figure out which it is PLEASE call your doctor, they REALLY need to know when your water breaks. Also, just to be on the safe side, don't take a bath (a shower is fine, just don't sit in water) and avoid sex. Both can cause a bad kind of baterial growth that can harm you and/or the baby.

I'm also pregnant for the first time and totally understand. I wish I had a mini midwife in my pocket that I could ask all my questions to everytime I worry. But I dont, so Yahoo Answers is the best thing I've got. I'm 23 weeks and haven't yet experienced what you're going through but- from my understanding Amniotic Fluid is yellow in color (I've heard it described as the color of hay). It also has a sweet smell to it and does not have a harsh ammonia like odor like urine is. Also, I've learned that discharge changes several times during pregnancy, I can't say if the change you've noticed indicates the onset of labor or not, but ask your doctor at your next appointment so they can check your cervix. Also, losing your mucus plug and having the baby drop are probably better indicators of the onset of labor.

First off, it is completely normal to have increased discharge as you get closer to your due date. Enough to have to wear a pad. AND, having some leakage from your bladder is also common since the baby is pushing on your bladder as he gets bigger. It probably is fine, but if you can't tell that the liquid is really urine or not (like you're not feeling yourself go a little) I would just have the doctor check to make sure your amniotic fluid is not leaking. It is possible to have a "leak" rather than an all-out "breakage" as far as your water goes. It's a quick test---and no, your doctor will not think you're paranoid! :) If it is leaking you do want to know because you could risk infection for the baby.

I have been peeing on myself as well! LOL! I know if a sneeze is coming or a cough I'd better cross my legs. More than likely it is just urine you are leaking. One sure way to tell is to smell it. If it smells like urine... than it's urine. If it doesn't than you need to call the doctor. This technique really doesn't work if you drink a lot of water though because your urine will not smell or it won't smell much. The best thing to do is ask your doctor about it at your next appointment. Don't worry though, leaking urine is very common in pregnancy. Your baby is probably pushing on your bladder and causing you to go. One thing I did learn is start doing your Kegal (sp?) exercises, they will help you keep better control of your bladder. As far as the discharge, you will have more and more the further along you get. As long as it doesn't have a foul odor everything is fine. Best wishes and good luck!

If it is your water, you can't stop the flow with force......or like trying to "hold it". If it is pee, it will stop, but you will feel like you can't hold it. How long has this been going on? Get a piece of toilet paper and wipe, look and see if it looks and smells like pee. Find out where it is coming from. If it is coming from the little hole, it is pee. If it is coming from the big whole, it is your water. The increase in discharge is probably your mucus plug coming out little by little.

you really should call your doctor and see if you can go to the hospital and to see if it is amniotic fluid. it sounds like it is. if you are not controlling it and it is coming out on it's own, it probably is.
