To start off with it's a good idea to get some formal training.
If you want to work as a television/film extra then you can start off straight away with a nice headshot and plenty of drive. Send your photo and personal info off to agencies that specialise in extras. They shouldnt ask for money up front as they will get a percentage of what you earn. Any company which asks for money please do not entertain them for one second.
If you are keen to get speaking roles then you will need to go down the route of formal training, you will need to have a stage performance you can invite agents to see, or you will need a showreel.
hope this helps, the best advice i can give you is to remain alert at all times to scams and listen to what other people working in the industry tell you, you can learn a lot from camera operators, sound men/women etc. they are all your friends!!!!
And remember - If it sounds too good to be true- it probably is a scam!
cheers

If you live in New York City, buy a copy of The Ross Reports publication, it lists New York City Talent Agencies.
If you are not in NYC, you will only run into phony Talent Agencies.
If you are in Texas, look on the SAG.org website, it lists legitimate Talent Agencies in Texas. Call the Talent Agencies and ask them what is their procedure for meeting new actors. (Texas is a "Right To Work State" and you do NOT have to be in SAG or AFTRA to work in Texas.)
SAG/AFTRA are combined as one union in Texas. If you are not a member of SAG/AFTR you can join both at once.
