The Last Day Of Summer by The Cure everyone eventually comes to a point where they realize that their best days are behind them...

Nothing i am
nothing i dream
nothing is new
nothing i think or believe in or say
nothing is true

it used to be so easy
i never even tried
yeah it used to be so easy...

but the last day of summer
never felt so cold
the last day of summer
never felt so old
never felt so...

all that i have
all that i hold
all that is wrong
all that i feel for or trust in or love
all that is gone

it used to be so easy
i never even tried
yeah it used to be so easy...

but the last day of summer
never felt so cold
the last day of summer
never felt so old
the last day of summer
never felt so cold

never felt so...

Long Black Veil - by The Band, Johnny Cash, Left Frizzell, or Dave Mathews...

He Stopped Loving Her Today - George Jones

The Last Morning and Carry Me, Carrie - Dr. Hook

Shooting Star - Bad Company

The Death Of Emmett Till - Bob Dylan

When I think of some more I'll edit my list..

Edit:

Seasons In The Sun - Terry Jacks

Cats In The Cradle - Harry Chapin

In The Ghetto - the one and only...Elvis!

Tears In Heaven - Eric Clapton

My Way - Frank Sinatra....I don't know if it is really sad, but it could be.

Knockin' On Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan or Gun's N' Roses....not exactly a "sad song", but it isn't happy either.

Hurt - Johnny Cash

The Ballad Of Curtis Lowe - Lynyrd Skynyrd

I'll Wait For You Joe Nichols Bill Anderson/Harley Allen The snow in Montana was three feet high The lady at the counter said: There ain't no flights And so he called her on the telephone He said: I'll rent a car and I'll drive home And she said: I'll wait for you Like I did last year At Christmas time with your family here And your truck broke down out in San Antone And the gifts stayed wrapped until you got home Oh, this ain't nothin' new Sweetheart, I'll wait for you Now he's on his cell phone in a Coupe Deville Talkin' to the one he loves and always will His heart is breakin' 'cause she's there alone Her heart is achin' 'cause she wants him home She says: I'll wait for you like in '68 When our child was due, but I said, he'll have to wait Until his dad gets here and stands by my side Remember, Dear, our son's first cry Oh, this ain't nothin' new Sweetheart, I'll wait for you He didn't stop all day to eat a bite And he finally got there around midnight The doctor said, she's in a better place She said to give this you this note just in case And it said, I'll wait for you at Heaven's gate Oh, I don't care how long it takes And I'll tell Saint Pete I can't come in Without my love and my best friend Oh, this ain't nothin' new Sweetheart, I'll wait for you P.S. I love you, too Sweetheart, I'll wait for you I thought this was the most sad thing I ever heard, when I heard it. I have to go now, I'm gonna cry.

Not the ultimate sad song.

How about Cats in the cradle.

When I heard that song a couple of years ago, I listened to the words and thought it was sad as how a father missed his child's life and when he got older the child did not have time for him. He realized that his boy grown up just like him.

I'm not a country music fan BUT I would have to say the saddest song I have ever heard is Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Paisley and Allison Krauss.

I like those.

How about
If I can't make you love me
Leader of the Pack-The Shangri-las.
and there was one song from the 50s or 60s about a couple getting in a car wreck and the girl dying but I can't remember it.
