Well, if you're going to follow the English model, then you'd also have to spend the money to teach english to those same people. Because that's what the British are doing. They're not just saying, "Learn to speak english or you won't get any benefits". They're saying, "We'll pay for someone to teach you english in order for you to keep your benefits." And they're doing this because it's difficult for many of these people to get jobs because of their poor english.

No it shouldn't and I am ashamed that this will be happening here in the UK.
While I believe that it is definitely to immigrants' benefit to learn the language of their new home and I further believe that they should be encouraged to do so; I do not believe that they should be blackmailed into doing so by reducing their benefits.
As is increasingly the case this is the Labour government pandering to the prejudices of Middle England.

The overwhelming majority of welfare recipients in the U.S. are native English speakers. This idea is not a bad one, it's just ineffective in saving any money in the US, because unlike other countries, in this country the immigrants are the hard workers and the welfare recipients are the ones born and bred and FED by handouts for generations. Our free loafers usually come from a LONG line of recipients. This can work in other countries, but won't even make a minuscule dent in the case of the United states' welfare expenditure.

It is happening in small pockets around the country. The ball always begin rolling somewhere, and communities are beginning to stop the bi-lingual conveniences.
I can only imagine how a poll would come out if this very important issue was ever put to the public on a national ballot.

We reformed welfare years ago to require people to work. They already lose their benefits after a certain amount of time if they don't get a job. Moot point!

Sounds great to me! I think you should be given a period of time to learn the language but if you fail to do it then you should pay the consequences.
Knowing another language is fine but this is America, learn the language or leave.

Yes. And then they can put the benefits in a fund to help pay for the damage.

My wife is British as you know and whilst liberal in my political views, I have never understood the levels to which the Brits have gone to be tolerant.
I am aware that there are people in the UK who have resided there for over 30 years and do NOT speak a word of English. In my work, I have been involved in Projects when we have to go over there to amend software to accomodate this nonsense.
It would NEVER be tolerated in the USA.
