Somebody told you a complete and utter lie. Zeppelin totally sucked live, but thats who they were. a very sloppy band, for the most part. It showed live.

I paid $6.50 to see Led Zeppelin. They started off with "Immigrant Song" which hadn't even been released yet. Wildly improvised versions of most of Led Zeppelin II, left Bonham alone on the stage to do "Moby Dick"; he tossed the sticks and played by hand! Then they went into a kind of mashup of songs, including Buffalo Springfield's "For What it's Worth." Came back and did "Communication Breakdown" for an encore. What can I say? 36 years ago and I can't forget it. It was fun to write this; thanx for asking.

Led Zeppelin made great records. Live, they were often stoned or drunk, which inhibited or enhanced their play, you be the judge.
The big difference is the sound quality. Led Zeppelin helped pioneer live performance equipment, but it wasn't there for them.
They were often loud and distorted. Also, many of their recorded songs had extra tracks they could not perform live.
They tended to disappoint live. Their blues stuff was very good though.

It definately was an experience. I've been to alot of concerts in my life, and most of the most memorable ones are from the 70's. Before too much glitz and hype took over. Musicians were musicians, not dancers and actors performing in a play like alot of todays groups. I guess it's just my age talking, but I sure wish there were more bands like back thn. Oh well, time for Grandpa to take his nappy!

Jimmy Page made his claim to fame as a studio musician. So did John Paul Jones. Both worked on many studio albums before Zeppelin became world famous. As a result, Zeppelin never toured much. They toured in 1974 and played Madison Square Garden, and rocked the house. I know someone who saw them play at the Garden and he said Page just blew everyone's mind with his guitar virtuoso, specially playing the guitar with a violent bow. Page and Jones, nevertheless, were at the top of their playing in studios.
