It began as a phrase to show bravery. Someone asked, "Are you scared?" You say, "Sweating like a pig", which meant, NO.
People who didn't understand the concept, have miscontrued it to where it now means just the opposite of what was intended. I always prefer the phrase, "Sweating like a whore in church".

it comes from over weight people who EAT likes pigs as that's how they got so fat. fat people sweat more hence sweat like a pig!!

I believe this metaphor is usually used for people who sweat while doing nothing...Usually overweight.
So try to look for a resemblance.
Not to offend anyone.

Maybe it means that someone smells so bad.....that someone must be lying around in muddy, icky water all day. Just like pigs do.
