I suggest a Macbook because they are an extremely good value. You will be getting a modern system with a Core 2 Duo processor, and it will handle the new OS 10.5 very well when released.

Also, if you look at the prices for used G4 Powerbooks and iBooks, the amount you will spend is very close to that of a new Macbook. The Macbook will serve you well for several years.

As for models, I recommend the white 2.0 Ghz model with superdrive, so that you can burn DVDs. It is the best value of the three base systems available.

I love Macs too! I just bought a Macbook online that should be coming any day now. I wasn't aware they still sold new G5s. The number one thing you should not buy used is a laptop. Although Macbooks can be expensive, they come with a built-in camera and microphone, as well as iLife '06, which includes iTunes, GarageBand, IMovie, iDVD and iPhoto.
I believe Safari comes on it as well, in fact I'm almost 100% sure it does. (In case you don't know, Safari is a web browser on Macs). Even if it does not come on it, FireFox, which is another web browser is available for free on the Firefox website. (http://www.firefox.com). As far as games go, sometimes it can be difficult to find games made for Macs, but many are. I am not sure what you mean by writing, but you can get Microsoft Office for Macs. However, it's expensive. When you buy a Macbook, you can get iWork for an extra $49. It includes Pages and Keynote, which are like Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

Hope this helps.

I work on a G5 (graphic artist) and I have an iBook (14 inch, G4) for home (I also have a old G3 iMac).

The G5 is great and all but for your uses, the macbook would be more than enough and you can easily "tote" it. ; )
