Be specific. I'm a guitarist, picking up the bass. Do you just randomly go up and down the major scale, changing your root note as the chords of the song change?

Jaco Pastorius was awesome on that. He played Studio and with Manhattan Transfer.
Stanley Clarke was a phenom.
Dave LaRue of Dixie Dreggs walks like crazy, he played in a little bar in B'Ham once when I saw them live 15 or so years ago.
To play the walking bass, well it is Jazz♫♪and blues and rock, stay in key, sorta, and walk the major/minors of the tune being played, or just solo walk it.
Jump on the main key note every 4th or 8th bar and your walking.

a walking bass line is a common blues type run or riff that you repeat ad infinitum usually. one example is using the low E string, go E-F#-G#-A-B-A-G#-F# (open-second-fourth-fifth-seventh-fifth-fourth-second) . Repeat this as the rythym. This is just an example of a walking bass line. Check out some Stevie Ray Vaughan or any blues for that matter, and you're guaranteed to pick some up.
