First there is Wet and Dry paper of various grits, Start with like a 600 grit, then 1000 grit, then 2000 grit and even a 4000grit. One would use that with water or oil as to float off the cuttings. Automotive paint stores stock this stuff $1 a sheet. You can literally "sand" a car finish with 2000 grit wet to nearly a high gloss

Then there are abrasive pastes. Those are according to a numerical system. For example there is a common black compound paste that is rated #475 and goes up to #13,000 it is made by Norton Abrasives. The higher the number the finer the polish possible.

A normal polish would be to start with WetDry paper, then advance in grit say start at 600, and end up at 2000, then polish with a #5000 paste with a felt pad.

On Jewelers rouge, that is a stick plus a wax compound which is really a coating of wax plus + abrasive that is applied to a rotating wheel which melts the stick and coats the cotton wheel. That wax leaves a higher polish effect on the Jewelry piece and it glistens in the showcase. I dont use that because I dont need the wax effect.
