The best way to write this type of essay is to write about something that interests you or that you know a lot about and have feelings about...
For instance, I have had students write persuasive essays on the use of cell phones in school, the use of MP3 players or iPods in the classroom, shortening the school week, legalization of some drugs, lowering the drinking age to 18. These are all topics that most students have opinions on as I see them used a lot but they are always different because peoples views are so different.

A great topic is ending world hunger. More people die from hunger and associated illness in the world every week than were killed in Nagasaki and Hiroshima put together. There are tons of research and facts available. It is an honorable and realistic arguement. In this modern world, no one should die of not having enough food. Look in your cupboards. Realize how much food you throw away all the time. Ending hunger is an idea whose time has come. It's a completely "do-able" thing. Good luck.

Just a few: why we should volunteer for a few hours every week/month at your local humane society, the importance of monthly breast exams for early detection of cancer, why we should/should not engage in stem cell research, the importance of a national health care system, why we should boycott companies that do animal testing, why we should test high school athletes for steroids (or any drug for that matter) :)
