In order to try and instill patriotism and unity in children, should we reinstitute the Pledge of Alliegence in schools?

Jean f....first off, I do not have children; secondly, the Pledge is not said in ALL schools. Private schools have the right to determine for themselves whether or not the Pledge will be given, conversely, public schools must abide by the wishes of the state in which they reside. Many states do not allow the Pledge in public schools. While I am certain that your children do, in fact, say the Pledge at their school, that does not mean that EVERY school does so as well.

When I was a child, the day in class started with the Pledge of Allegiance.

During my high school years, in the 50's, the knee-jerkers in Washington added the phrase "under God" to it. That changed the whole pledge - It went from being a wonderful statement of patriotism and love of country to a religious statement. THAT's why it was taken out of the schools. Religious activites are not permitted in public schools.

Personally, they should remove the offending phrase and revert to the original patriotic pledge. Then, each day could start with the Pledge again.

I no longer recite it and haven't since they added the phrase. I do stand respectfully but it has no meaning to me anymore. It doesn't mean I love my country less - it just means I don't espouse any "god" and don't think I should say so.

If you have Children you need to keep up with them a lot more. The Pledge of Allegiance is still said in all the schools...

They are saying the pledge of allegiance in the schools in Texas.

There was even a recent stick down here because parents found out that they had the kids in one school do the Mexican pledge.

No. Patriotism is over and above than reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. It's life long learning. Teach the children the importance of being loyal to their country and extol the patriotic values of the founding fathers by living them as examples. It's more effective than forcing it down their throats.

ABSOLUTELY, I said it everyday and it meant something to me. Schools in N. Korea teach a class on the hatred of America, why can't we have a pledge?

ABSOLUTELY! We can afford 30 seconds to remember why we have the freedom and way of life we do.
