Just moved into a new flat which is electric only. Never used storage heaters before and there are no instructions. I have a socket on the wall for the power supply, but the red light comes on and off when it seems to feel like it; there is a dial for input, a dial for output and apparently no timer. I'm cold - how do I make them work properly!

Hi, Usually storage heaters are automatically timed to come on at night ( if you're on economy 7 electricity tariff it will be much cheaper at night but a bit more expensive during the day ). Just leave them switched on all the time, they should automatically come on at night and switch off in the morning. Also, turn both dials up to maximum for max warmth. They store the heat ( in bricks inside the heater ) and are warm all day.

Plug it in. Turn both of the dials on. The red light should stay on nearly all the time. If you put your hand above it, you should feel some heat rising, but it's going to take a while to warm up the place. Find a wool blanket to wrap up in for now. These are not "instant heat devices". See the link below for pictures and explanation.

As soon as the flat warms a little bit, turn down the input dial. Heat will continue to come out of the storage bricks. You are using more expensive daytime electricity to create the heat.

What happened to good old central heating eh!!

I know exactly what you mean, afraid I cant give you exact advice as each works in there own way (plus I still don't fully understand mine!)

But make sure the socket on the wall is on....
When the heater is below a temp the red light appears. Once its reached its highest temp the red light turns itself off...
I just turn the dials till the heating comes on .....

okay thats really bad advice, I don't fully understand it myself!

They should be set to warm up over night on cheap rate electricity and release the warmth slowly throughout the day. Ask your landlord how to set the dials. if you have bought the flat then contct the precious owners and ask them (through the estate agent if necessary.)

What you have to do is set them for the following day, say you put your heater on now it wont come on till tommorow. if there are Dimplex you can boost room temp, i think that has immediate affect.
