Every couple of days I get an call from 'unknown' on my mobile. I answer and it sounds like i'm ringing out - dialing tone. Once someone picked up and just put it down. Is this yet another sales tactic or something more sinister?

sounds like a marketing call. they have automatic dialing systems that randomly call peoples numbers, once you pick up the random dialler transfers you to a person who is usually selling something. Its a new system they use so the operators arent hanging around waiting for some1 to pick up the phone. Best advice, as soon as it rings when you pick up.... hang up !!!

The best solution is no not answer calls from numbers that are withheld.

What happens is that the caller uses an autodialler that rings several numbers simultaneously. As long as somebody answers, they don't care, and all the rest of the lines are hung up after that. When you answered, they must have just got a response from another line, so yours got hung up.

Also, register for free at the national do not call registry. This will prevent most if not all spam calls reaching your phone. This can now be done with landlines as well as cellphones.

Probably a call centre in Bangalore or similar. They dial about 100 numbers at a time. Chances are that someone answered before you and the call was dropped.

no- it's a sicko trying to freak you out. Don't answer it and the culprit will soon get bored of having no impact on you.

Sounds like "prank" calling. You could call the police and have them trace it if it really is bothering you.
