It took a little while to get used to, but years later (including a brief 6 month hiatus to try the East Coast again) I'm still here.

There is always work, so there's no excuse not to be employed. That's not to say that you can get the job you want, but at least you can get *a* job. If you are in the trades you would do especially well right now during the construction boom on the Strip.

Prices for ugly stucco homes stacked on top of each other are pretty high. If you look hard enough there are still deals to be found on older homes though, and if you can do some work on a fixer-upper, even better. An apartment can be had for less than a mortgage, but even those prices are going up. The housing issue is probably my number one complaint.

You can always get something to eat. Back in CT, if I wasn't thinking about dinner by 7 or 8pm, I'd be out of luck. Here it's no problem to get a full dinner (or breakfast) around the clock. One of the benefits of living in a three shift town.

There's always something to do. There are an abundance of attractions, both natural and man-made, in and around the city. Everything from clubs to museums to casinos to theater in the park. Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, Red Rock, Valley of Fire, Grand Canyon. Some musician or comedian or other miscellaneous celebrity is always coming to town.

It's diverse. My neighborhood sees no color.

Everybody wants to come here, which means your odds of finding cheap tickets in and out of town are better than if you lived in say Hartford.

It's in Nevada, so there are no federal payroll taxes.

It's a sprawling, bustling city, but Lake Mead is a short drive away. Good for hiking, biking, camping, kayaking, water skiing, sailing, and so on. $20 gets you an annual pass. (Not counting whatever boat you might be hauling.)

Lots of good shopping if you're into that. Plenty of high end restaurants as well.

Despite being in a Red state, Vegas is pretty liberal. Obviously. But we're still gun friendly.

All that nice stuff aside, there certainly are issues. We are #2 in the country for car thefts. There is gambling everywhere, it destroys lives, and you can see it. Part of being in a three shift town is that there are three shifts after which people go out after work and get drunk. While I'm driving to work at 8:30am, someone else is driving home from the bar. The air can get pretty gross. I'm never a fan of the brown cloud - a mix of dust and smog - hanging over the city. There are a lot of terrible drivers here, everybody runs yellow lights, and many people run reds.

If you move here and don't pace yourself, you could burn out pretty quick. Some people just need to be reminded that it's a marathon, not a sprint.

Overall I find it a nice place to live as a young guy (although I'm not a party animal) with no family. Just me, the little woman, and the dogs. I don't know that I'd raise a family here myself, but I don't necessarily disagree with those that choose to.

Vegas is a very exciting town for a young person or couple because the nightlife is never ending. There are so many clubs and restaurants, you could never go to them all. Away from the strip is a town like any other suburban town. You can find a decent job very easily. The biggest downside is the fact that no one has been here very long, or stays very long. Therefore, there is no real sense of "community". Plus, because of the diverse mix of demographics, you get "riff-raff" (as I like to call it) no matter where you live. We moved her roughly ten years ago and since have had three kids. As far as raising kids here, it's not so bad, but we send our kids to private school. The one thing I hate is that I don't feel safe with them playing in the front yard. Vegas does, however, have a smaller city feel next to one of the biggest tourist destinations around. So, it depends on what you want. Housing was expensive, but prices seem to be dropping. There are lots of opportunities, just a few drawbacks.

Well, it depends. I lived there for 4 yrs while in the Air Force and I was single. It was lots of fun but it can eat you alive if you're not careful. It's not a good place to raise a family, They call it Sin City for a reason!
