Dell is a great company to get a PC. They have awesome deals and some active coupons as well. Right now, there is a 20% off $999 coupon on laptops. That, and other coupons are available at http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html
I personally have 2 Dell laptops. I would get another in a second.
Good Luck

I always use DELL as they offer the best value for money, but be warned that when you start the buying process and "Checking" the add on boxes what started of as a low price soon becomes much higher most of my frieds have a Dell. Be wary of PC World their computers are either obsolete when they on the shelf or become obsolete within six weeks. Rule of thumb is the cheaper it is the more unsupportable or unflexible it is. Try www.morgancomputers.co.uk (located between Tottenenham Court Road Tube station and Holborn Tube station ) For good deals on Computers (especially Laptops).

I have to disagree stay away from Dell at ALL costs. Their tech support was outsourced to India and you get nothing but the run around. I am a technician and I've done a lot of Dell warrenty work for people and it's nothing but a HUGE hassle trying to get an answer out of them. I build my own but if you want to buy one you Gateway and E-Machines are about the best. I've worked on very few E-Machines and I read an article here recently that E-Machines have the best tech support.

I'll compare all of the ones that I have worked with and give the pros and cons of both...
Dell -
Pros: Excellent hardware and performance. Mid-range price, but good value for your money. Their customer service is amazing; as long as you're under warranty, they will practically replace your compuer for you should it break down
Cons: the expansion boards inside their desktops come welded in, allowing for expansion, but not replacement. So avoid if you're planning on upgrading the system yourself
HP -
Pros: Decent value, lower price caps, great burner/printer hardware + software. Easily upgradeable
Cons: Not as reliable as Dell, systems tend to not perform as highly or even come in highly advanced packages. Warranty depends on the place where you purchase the system
Gateway -
Pros: Really cheap...upgradable...
Cons: Poor hardware quality, systems run significantly slower than other brands of equivalent specs
Self-built -
Pros: fun! You'll learn a lot about computers by doing this, plus you are intimately involved with every aspect of your system. Tend to perform on par with most brand name systems (except for gateway; custom-builts ALWAYS work better than gateway)
Cons: Can be expensive, takes time and effort and a LOT of research. No warranty, but then again you can build 'em so you can fix 'em!
There are others such as Alienware, PCworld, and even Best Buy's own brand; however I can't comment on these from experience, though I have at least heard good things about Alienware.
Happy hunting!

You cannot go far wrong with a Dell. Its what I would call a "piece of mind" machine. If you ever have an issue they have great support.
Of course you could go the non-PC route and get yourself a Mac. You get even better support and in my opinion a superior operating system along with great looking hardware.

I suggest you go to an independent computer shop as opposed to these chains!! They can make you a computer that is designed to fit your needs and requirements.
