it has to do with the rifle which belonged to the Japanese hunter (father of the girl). He gave it to his arab guide and then the children used it to shoot the American. As far as I understand it, what you do in one part of the world, affects someone else far away :))

I agree that her plot line is the most difficult to connect to the film's essential theme, which is that cultural and LINGUISTIC differences separate us in fundamental and dangerous ways.

The young Japanese girl lived in a world where, because of her condition, "normal" communication was impossible, even though she was living among people that shared a common language. I would suggest that the point the director was making was that the kinds of rifts between people that were MOST apparent in the Brad Pitt/Cate Blanchett story line are even evident among people of the same culture...and even among FAMILY members.
