Water with normal salt in it will just make you vomit, as well as taste revolting.

You have probably heard about re-hydration salts, which are entirely different, often given after sudden bouts of vomiting and diarrhea to replace the natural salts lost during illness.

The salts in these medicines (because that is what they are) are not your average table salt, they are electrolytes and also contain sugars. They are in medicines such as Dioralyte.

They ought not to be used by diabetics or anyone with kidney or liver problems, or during severe vomiting/diarrhea or dehydration, so if you do decide to try them you ought to consult a doctor first.

For cross country just drink plenty of water and some lucozade or other type of energy drink, although not too much too soon prior to the race, because an excess of fluid can also make you feel ill (as well as make you want to stop for a pee half way round!).

Personally I think a doctor would not prescribe these and I think if you spoke to a chemist they wouldn't recommend the use of them either. Stick to normal h2o and power drinks designed for sports people!

Oh, and good luck in the competition!

I wouldn't recommend it. Plain water or a sports drink will suffice. The idea is to stay hydrated but to still let the natural course of perspiration take place. Staying hydrated will help you keep from cramping among other ill effects.

Don't drink salt water. Keep Gatorade handy, it's better for you.
