Hello!
If you're transferring to the main campus, Boca, you won't have a problem. FAU isn't any more of a "commuter school" than the other universities in Florida (for example, only ~10% of people who attend UCF live on-campus, meaning 90% of people commute). FAU has something like 2500 people on campus, with at least another 600 in the Fall, plus 2000+ coming by 2010 (we're building a lot of new housing, especially with the new football stadium).
The best way to meet people is to get involved on campus. There are hundreds of clubs, student government, intermural sports, Greek stuff, program board events, University Press (great people), etc.
I used to just come to school and go home. Terrible experience. Then, when I got involved on campus, I met so many people that now I can't go anywhere without bumping into someone I know.
Another good way is to just hang out in the University Center or by HPT. People are almost always doing something over by the HPT lawn, whether it's volleyball, kickball, barbecues, dances, etc. I was sitting outside of HPT the other night and this dude came up and asked me if I wanted to join them in playing ultimate frisbee.
Despite what you may have heard, FAU has a very active campus life. I always have a great time here. So don't worry. If you try, you can meet people here.
Have a good one! And welcome to FAU!
