Twelve months is generally when the transition from formula/breastmilk to regular milk is made. I would definitely talk to your child's pediatrician before making the switch. At least put a call into the office if you can't wait until your appointment next week. Some babies have to drink soy formula, but then move onto regular cow's milk just fine, others will need to stay on soy milk or even Lactaid if they are lactose intolerant. You and your child's pediatrician can decide which milk would be best for your child.

I started my daughter right around 1 year but I started by mixing half and half with the formula the slowly fazed out the formula all together she did very well with it even though she was not on a soy formula I would assume that you could do the same thing.

Many doctors recommended formula for 18 months or even longer. The WHO organization says you should breastfeed for at least 2 years, why wouldn't formula be the same. Formula is far more nutritous than milk, and while a baby is getting most of their calories from breastmilk/formula/milk they aren't WEANED.
I know it is expensive, but so is soy milk.

It is perfectly acceptable to start working in some regular milk. I wouldn't go with the soy milk unless your doctor specifically tells you to as regular milk has the calcium that he needs to develop strong bones, etc.

Yes, he will be fine. but I do remember that they should have whole milk until they are 2 years old and then it can be 2 % or low fat

i would give him 2% milk to start off with, and it is ok to give to him, Doctors don't always like to tell u to do that but , they do not pay for your formula. all 4 of my children were off of formula before they were one, they also sell the powder nondairy milk witch works great and not expensive as well it last alot longer than milk. it is also easy on their stomach. best of luck to you.
