A box spring does nothing for the comfort or discomfort of the mattress. The box spring's only reason for existing is that is supports the mattress on the bed frame. For example the cheap metal frames with only 2 little bars across them. the box spring holds and supports the mattress on that type of frame to keep it from sagging also. There are multi styles of beds that don't even require the use of a box spring cause there is either a board or enough braces to hold the mattress without sagging. And you don't need a bed frame either, that also has nothing to do with the comfort of the mattress, if its a bad mattress then no matter what it won't help. A good mattress will help your back, no matter what its sitting on.

As long as you have a boxspring under your mattress it doesn't matter where you put it. And if you don't have a boxspring, on the floor would be best, as it would make it more firm, which is better for your back. The only important thing, when sleeping you should lie on you back. It's much easier on the spine, and can help prevent lower back pain. But if you took this guy in, and he isn't paying or sleeping on the street, why is he complaining about not have a lifted mattress? *If you need a cheap bed (and don't weigh a ton) get four large create and a piece of plywood. You can even decorate it with a bedskirt!

i don't think a bed frame really matters, but it's a good idea to have a box spring under the mattress.

I put the matress on the floor and had worse bad pain. I find the best thing to do is to put is on a boxspring and if you have pressure point problems like me, put a sleeping bag or comforter on top or the matress to act as a pad. This will help if your matress is very firm like mine is.

I have done this I personally just like having the frame because it is more ascetically pleasing and it is possible that you could attribute your back problems to that. I slept on a futon for 4 years and my back always was killing me. You just have to fuss a lot they eventually give in :) Good Luck!

Your boyfriend is right. The weight distribution is better and you have a totally flat surface underneath you.
