I did a little comparison of dog foods at my feed store one day (I didn't even bother to look at Iams, Purina, Pedigree, etc. because I already know they're poor quality foods). They carry almost every brand of dog food and I was looking for something that I could switch too if ever the need came up. I currently feed Wysong Synorgon and I actually found that it was the best.
I discounted foods that had a carbohydrates as the #1 ingredient or corn in the top 5, had any kind of meat meal (meals are cooked and processed to utilize protein % but are inferior to actual meat), or had something funky in the 1st 5 ingredients like brewer's rice or something.
Chicken Soup was the next best, but I think it had some kind of meal in the top 5 and was actually more expensive than Wysong.

i recently blogged on pet nutrition... and although i didn't choose beneful to compare, i think you can find this information useful when choosing a food for your pet to eat. here is an excerpt:
There's little question that premium cat food like Nutro Max and Iams contain better quality ingredients than most regular store brands. The premium pet food claim that the higher-quality ingredients provide better nutrition, pets will eat less of it, thus making the cost difference is negligible. At the lower end of the dry food price spectrum are supermarket brands like Pedigree and Meow Mix. Pet owners rave about how their pets gobble up these products.
Just as for human food, there are regulations regarding the labeling of pet food that can help consumers assess the amount of meat in the food. If a product is labeled "Beef Dog Food", for example, 95% of its ingredients must be beef. If it says "Chicken Dinner" or "Lamb Formula", it must contain only 25% of the meat. If the packaging simply states "Chicken Flavor", the food merely needs to taste like chicken to the pet; it does not need to actually have any chicken in it.
Many foods contain by-products, meat meal, or bone meal. The nutritional values of these types of ingredients can vary greatly from batch to batch. “Chicken by-products” include head, feet, entrails, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, liver, stomach, bones, blood, intestines, and any other part of the carcass not fit for human consumption. "Chicken meal" consists of chicken flesh, skin and bones only. A label that says "meat meal" doesn't indicate a source and can come from just about any animal. These are the parts of the animal left over after the meat has been stripped away from the bone. Meat meal can contain the boiled down flesh of rendered animals we would find unacceptable for consumption. This can include zoo animals, road kill, and 4-D (dead, diseased, disabled, dying) livestock. Euthanized cats and dogs often end up in rendering vats along with other questionable material to make meat meal. This can be problematic because sodium pentobarbital can withstand the heat from rendering. Remember the food pets call by name? Kinda like us humans putting butter in grits, tallow (rendered beef or mutton fat) is sprayed onto the cheaper brands to make them more palatable!
Use of preservatives in human food has become a concern and has translated to pet food. The best pet foods have switched to Vitamins C or E (tocopherol) as preservatives rather than artificial components. If you decide to avoid artificial preservatives, check the label. Some common names of these chemicals include BHA/BHT, ethoxyquin and propyl gallate. Studies have shown that BHA,BHT, Ethoxyquin is regulated by the FDA and canNOT be used in human food. All three have been shown to cause cancer in lab animals. If we won't eat it for fear of cancer, why feed it to our pets?
Although the best pet foods cost more due to their premium ingredients, premium pet foods are so densely packed with nutrients and calories (a good thing for animals) that your pet can be satisfied with smaller servings, which benefits your pet's digestion and weight, as well as your wallet. Because these foods contain less filler, your pet absorbs more of the food consumed as nutrients, so less is passed as waste. Premium cat foods may initially appear to cost significantly more, but the amount of food your pet actually needs to eat can be reduced with higher quality meals -- your pet will need to eat less to be satiated..The decreased volume of food will also shrink the amount of solid waste produced by your pet. So potentially, using a higher-quality cat food could also save you money on kitty litter and pooper-scooper baggies!
Here are the ingredients, suggested daily feeding amounts, and price of 6 dog food brands. Please note that these prices are ALL at Petco, I also tried to pick the “mid” size bag of food, and also the ‘plain’ kind if available (no fancy flavors or formulas).
