How can I keep better in touch with my friends and family who live far away?

I always want to keep myself updated from my friends and family who live far away, but I always forget to do so. So, how can I improve on this aspect?

SET ASIDE AN HOUR OR SO ONCE A WEEK TO COMMUNICATE THROUGH E-MAIL/PHONE/ETC. STICK TO IT AS YOU WOULD A JOB.

you can call them, e-mail them, and maybe visit them once every 2 years or so
