Edgar Allan Poe, was the son of two actors, his father abandoned his mother as soon as Edgar was born. His mother sufferered from tuberculosis and soon died leaving Edgar and two other siblings orphaned. The wife of a wealthy merchant, I think Mr John Allan, convinced her husband, to adopt, Edgar. Edgar, began to hear tales of sea merchants along with those of African American servants. From an earlier, age Edgar was terrified and also preoccupied with death, so much so, that at one point in time he would scream while passing a cementery. The Allan's then moved to Ireland, where Edgar continued to expand his knowledge of human nature. When the family returned back to Richmond, VA, Edgar began to write poems in his earlier teens, then he fell in love with a girl named Elmira, and went as far as to propose to her, but both sets of parents were oppossed to this engagement, Elmira was soon convinced to marry someone else, and Edgar begins to drink heavily. His stepfather sent Edgar to the University to study Law in 1826, with only $100, to cover expenses and tuition, Edgar's total was over $400. To make ends meet, Edgar took to gambling, and was soon into serious debt, the relationship with his stepfather, not an easy one, continued slowly to deteriorate. After his foster father un-enrolled Edgar from university, Edgar left home and went to Boston, there he enrolled himself into West Point after having lied about his name and age. Another blow occurred to Edgar when his beloved step mother died, and once more Edgar fell into serious debt. Edgar, began to have second thoughts about his career in the army, and began to miss classes, drills and parades, his attendance was so bad, that he was court marshalled.
Discharged he moved to Baltimore, with his aunt Muddy, and his cousin Virginia. By then Edgar had a tremendous amount of classic books read under his belt, and he discovered the use of opium to complement his addiction to alcohol. Edgar entered many stories contests and also began a torrid affair with a girl named Mary Devereaux, this affair ended due to Poe's frightening behavior while he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol. His first story to win a $50. 00 prize in Baltimore was Ms in A Bottle. After John Allan died, leaving nothing to Edgar, he decided to marry his cousin Virginia, then only 13 in a secret ceremony, and later in a public one, stating that she was 20 years old. In 1842, Virginia caught consumption ,and died, this drove Edgar to the edge, soon he would also perish in a mysterious matter.
