When I brake my oil pressure light flickers but when the car is accelerating it goes off, could I need a new oil pump or enginge flush? The car was sitting in frigid temps, until recently. And there is oil in the car.

it sounds like its your oil pump, but i would try cleaning out the engine first(better watch cleaning it out, especially if the engine is very dirty, cause it can clog up the oil pump screen).if that doesnt work, change the sending unit.it should be located right by the oil filter.

First, you need to check your oil with the car off, if it has bean driven let it set at least for 5 minutes on a level surface to allow all the oil to accumulate in the oil pan. If you have done this and there is oil on the appropriate mark on the dipstick take your car to a mechanic now, do not wait. This could be something as simple as a loose wire. If this is true you will not be out very much money, if it is mechanical you will cause severe damage to the motor. The main thing is to get more than one mechanic to look at this. Your best bet is to find a dealership that might be able to diagnose this problem for free...... Some shops will do a basic inspection for free......

could be a bad sending unit, try putting a pint of oil additive in with oil.if that stops it oil was too thin and needs changed.transmission has nothing to do with oil light but is recommended that fluid be changed every 70,000 miles.have a trusted mechanic check oil pressure for you, will indicate problem in pump,if pump fail will cost a lot more

Answers in ascending order of cost:
1) Oil level is low. You said you did check???
2) Oil grade is too thick for winter.
3) Oil filter is clogged. When did you last change it?
4) Oil pressure switch is faulty.
5) Oil pump is worn out.
My money is on number 4. I've seen them die.

I too have the red oil can coming on and of when I stop or turn, additionally, the engine seems to rattle before the light comes on. (and it continues to rattle until my husband adds a quart of oil) This problem seems to be occurring about every 2 weeks. It has gone in to be serviced and is OK for awhile, then it starts again. It s scheduled to go in again this week to have mini look at it yet again, I haven t seen any oil on the ground... Very disgusted.

It sounds as if you may be low in oil (just one quart can cause this problem) or your oil is too thick for the current weather conditions - I am using 5w-30 and I am in CA

Don't know how old your car is but these lights are typically called "dummy lights." They come on and go off at times for no known reasons.
It's a sensor that's causing this issue. Take it to the dealer and they can figure out how to shut it off. If I could find the wire, I would cut it myself.

Ok, there's oil in it, but is there ENOUGH oil in it? If so, you're oil pump may be goin' out.
