Atlantis is the subject of a legend about an advanced island civilization that was destroyed or lost.
Stories about Atlantis are first mentioned in Plato's dialogues Timaeus and Critias, in which characters say it was destroyed by an earthquake or a tsunami about 9,000 years before the time in which Plato wrote.
The story claims Atlantis was somewhere outside the Pillars of Hercules.
According to Plato, the story originated with Ancient Egyptian priests.
Some people believe that the stories are fictions made up to serve the purposes of Plato's dialogs.
But others take them as if they were serious historical accounts. There have been dozens — perhaps hundreds — of locations proposed for the classical Atlantis.
Some are more-or-less serious attempts at legitimate scholarly or archaeological works; others have been made by psychic.

It was of the coast of South America there is a tradition that was shared by the Aztecs and Mayans about a god like man Quetzalcoatl or Kuklulcan The Feathered Serpent who was Caucasian and came from a sacred island . Plato described what Solon had heard from an Egyptian sage the island was beyond the Pillars of Hercules which rules out the Mediterranean and opposite a large continent but the island wasn't that big it was the influence they had as a maritime culture that was remembered .

Atlantis, greek for Island of Atlas is supposed to lie beyond the Pillars of Hercules which today is supposed to be the Straits of Gilbrata. Plato indicated this means Atlantis is supposed to lie in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The story was first told by Plato in the times of the ancient Greeks.
Atlantis is generally seen as a myth created by Plato to illustrate his political theories. Although the function of the story of Atlantis seems clear to most scholars, they dispute whether and how much Plato's account was inspired by older traditions. Some scholars argue Plato drew upon memories of past events such as the Thera eruption or the Trojan War, while others insist that he took inspiration of contemporary events like the destruction of Helike in 373 BC or the failed Athenian invasion of Sicily in 415–413 BC.

There is a lot of scientific evidence to support the theory that it is in fact hidden deep underneath the antartic ice sheets, using sonar scans (i think it was sonar) it´s been discovered there are infact 3 islands, the shape of which match old maps of atlantis.
These islands were once in a tropical region of earth, but due to
- Plate tectonics means that these islands have over time moved away from the tropical regions and gone towards the polar regions.
- The earths shape is not a perfect sphere, it is in fact slightly oval shaped, this causes the earth to ´tilt´every now and then making it so that entire surface of the earth moves so that regions that were in tropical regions go elsewhere.
There are multiple website that I have seen to support this theory, but this theory is only one of the many i have heard.
Other locations for atlantis include, of the coast of africa, and under the ocean of the coast of florida.

In Plato's Critias and Timaeas. Though there is no doubt that there are lost and sunken cities my view, open to review in the light of further evidence, is the at Atlantis is just one of Socrates stories. Plato is the only ancient source for the myth.

well, many believe it is under water(sea), in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle and that the energy it creates is the cause of those mysterious disappearances within the triangle
another theory I also find interesting is that it might be another planet under water where life forms had escaped and come to earth(that's the idea behind stargate atlantis tv show)

Somewhere in the Greek islands. A volcanic eruption destroyed (and sank) the island of Santorini as well as some other islands sometime around 1450 bc. The civilization that lived on the Greek islands at the time was an advanced civilization for its day.

one theory I saw is that it is actually under land. the theory is that Atlantis was built on lowlands. Water pocket built up underground. then when water levels changed the water pushed up through the dirt basically turning the whole place into quicksand. and Atlantis sunk into the earth.
don't know how accurate or plausible it is. I saw it on the history channel.
