I think that everything existed once - probably even leprechauns and faeries - but the advances in technology and human knowledge led to their extinction, quite a sad theory I know but remember when you were little kids and you may have believed in the tooth fairy and Santa, then grown up's came along and told you other wise, now they don't exist because that's what we are told, maybe ignorance can truly be bliss???

Yes.

I have a group of friends who saw one in an area that is now developed by builders.

Also my brother saw (in the same area) wild pigs that had been torn apart and partially eaten.

We don't have bears or wolves or even Tassie devils here on the mainland! So what do you reckon?
