I have to go to negril in Feb 2008 for a wedding at the Rockhouse. My family and I aren't allow to stay at the Rochhouse b/c we have small children. Should I be concerned about traveling aroun in the Negril area? We are leaning towards staying at the Riu all inclusive which I'm told is about 15 minutes away.

You should be fine as long as you take a taxi back and forth. However, is there nothing closer that you can go to with the kids?

Negril is a safe place. I stayed at the RIU in May of 2006 and absolutely loved it. There are actually 2 RIU's in Negril, and I stayed at the RIU Club. I cannot say enough about what a great time I had.
There were a few children there, but not many. I think you may want to check the RIU down the beach to see what they have going. I have heard they are more family oriented, although I can't say that the RIU Club Negril was anti kids. They did have programs for kids, and like I said, the kids all seemed to be enjoying themselves.
I will tell you that RIU is very customer oriented. The food is excellent, the rooms are nice and clean, the beaches are great, and the pools are sparkeling. I truly cannot think of even one negative aspect there at all.
I do however recommend you don't waste your money on the "shopping expedition" that many of the travel people offer through the hotel. It is very limited, and I found everything I needed at the airport on the way out, and was glad I had waited, as the prices are much better.
I plan to go again this year, and will stay again at a RIU. Out of curiosity, I may try another RIU, but just out of curiosity.
I highly recommend the RIU.
Have a great time!

The Rui Hotel is pretty far away from the Rockhouse Hotel. That is one of the first secluded Hotels that you see when you first enter Negril. Check out non- inclusive hotels on the beach they give you a better feel of Negril and is absolutely safe. Check out Negril.com. This is a site dedicated to everyone who loves Negril. They will tell you about the different hotels and will give you a better idea of Negril. Enjoy!

OK, first let me say that Jamaica was never on my places to travel. My girl at that time wanted to go to an all inclusive, Couples, but that made two strikes because all inclusive to me you never get the full feel of the island. Anyway, she convinced me and boy did I have a BLAST!!!

Well, it's been a few years but if I had to do it again I would take Air Jamaica since they took you to Nigril. With the other airlines you had to go to Montego Bay and take a shuttle bus for a 45 min ride. The area is beautiful and we had no problems with security, although the resort mentioned that you stay on the resort. We even rented a car and drove around with no problems.

There is alot for the kids to do on the beaches outside of the resort. The beach nightlife is very family friendly.

It's not a problem. Have fun.

Prepare yourself to be delighted. Negril is breathtakingly beautiful. It does have a reputation for being a partying place, but like any other destination , it is what you make of it. I do not think crime is a major problem in Jamaica. In our three trips there, we have had only wonderful experiences and made many lasting friends. We are going back in late February, too. Your children should be delighted with the beaches and be sure to check out the cliff divers at Rick's. Say hi to Spiderman, Just relax, mind your little children, and let Jamaica work its magic on your soul. Do wear sunscreen, and go hungry!
