I am trying to install a memory card reader to my computer. The website tells me that it needs to be plugged into a port rather than a Hub- hey - I have no idea what the difference is or what to do. It is a Sakar digital reader/writer- just supposed to be able to plug it in and it does the trick- having no luck here. Anyone got any ideas?????

If you do not know what a USB hub is, you do not have one. It is something you would have added to the PC after you purchased it.

A USB port is the connector that is build right into your computer. Because most computer only have a couple of USB port, you can purchase what is known as a USB hub. It is an external box that plugs into a USB port, and then has 4-8 more ports on it. It allows you to increase the number of USB ports on your computer. It does not come with the computer. You would have had to have added it later.

Your camera wants you to plug in directly into a port that is build into your computer.

Unpowered USB hubs have to draw power from the PSU or battery and the amount of power a USB 2.0 can draw is limited, so your HDD's may not be receiving enough power (this may only be a problem because they are running through a USB hub) so they are not running as they should. A powered USB hub can supply much more power to any device plugged in. Other thoughts: Wtf? Your laptop only has a 16 GB HDD inside it? What were you thinking when you bought this? Did you just get it from a family member? Sorry. I suggest buying an internal laptop HDD with a larger storage capacity as well.

A USB port is the "little thingy" that is small and rectangular in the back of your computer where the mouse and keyboard get plugged in. You may have some in the front of your computer as well. A USB hub is a collection of several USB ports that is installed outside of your computer - these are installed when people run out of USB ports to plug stuff in.
Plug that Sucker (er Saker) into one your USB ports on the back or front of your computer - just like you would do if you were using your flash drive.

Many times a USB hub does not supply the correct amount of power needed for some devices. A USB port on the other hand which comes from the computer itself does supply the correct amount of power.
You can buy a USB hub that has a power adapter and that usually will work.

A USB port is something that is on your computer. A USB hub is external to your computer and had a bunch of USB ports on it. A lot of times, if people don't have enough USB ports to plug all their stuff into they will get a hub and plug that into one of the USB ports they do have and then plug all their stuff (printers, ipods, scanners, PDA dock, keyboard, etc) into the hub.
