There are advantages and disadvantages - uniforms promote discipline (if you've ever had a 'non-uniform day' the students, especially in the younger students, they go crazy!) and are lifelines for, say, less fortunate children who wouldn't have money to buy designer clothes which, with no uniform, a lot of people would resort to; so uniform prevents bullying. It's also very efficient for the school, say in safety and corporate identity.
As for disadvantages, they can be expensive and for students, they have limited choice. Some may feel everyone is the same, leaving no room for personal identity, and the styles can be very limited in different weather conditions causing discomfort.

Absolutely. School should not be a daily fashion show, but it is. Those who can't afford to wear the designer names or whatever happens to be "in" that week are shunned as outcasts. Making uniforms mandatory would eliminate that completely superficial and unnecessary competition between students. It also saves parents money -- in San Antonio, the "uniform" is a polo shirt and slacks (girls have the option of wearing skirts), the polo shirts are about $8.00 a piece, the slacks are about $18.00, and the skirts are about $16.00, so you can buy two or three whole outfits for what you would pay for one pair of "everybody's wearing them" jeans. Now, those who argue against uniforms claim (and I stress the word CLAIM) that making children wear uniforms turns them into conformists and stifles creativity. Not true (it's bull$h!t from where I sit). While it is true that it restricts a child's ability to express himself/herself through clothing, it doesn't restrict any other form of expressing individuality or creativity. However, wearing a uniform promotes two very important things: (1) Unity -- everyone who wears the same uniform that you do is a member of your team, and (2) Equality -- it also reinforces the idea that you are no better than the person sitting next to you who is wearing the same thing. Anyone can look and see that everyone who wears a uniform is different, so again, the argument about conformity and restricting creativity is bunk, but it completely does away with the social stratification based entirely on what you wear. So the wear of uniforms in school is really a win-win for all involved.

Yes!
I am glad that my kids wear uniforms. My son will tell strangers about his new spiderman shoes, or whatever. This way they aren't talking about what the other kids are wearing and paying attention to school!
I don't like the added cost, and the fact that the stores hardly carry them during the year, but I would rather them learn about school, not others fashion.

As much as many would say that it takes away from the childs identity, school uniforms would help those that are less fortunate to not feel that way so much as everyone would be wearing the same thing. also it would help avoid gang issues as well.

There should be school uniforms so you don't have to think about what clothes you are going to wear today. As long as schools and clothing shops don't get together to make loads of money out of parents by forcing them to buy stupid uncomfortable clothing.
