The song opens with the lyrics THIS SONG IS DEDICATED TO THE NEWLYWEDS' - other lyrics are 'this is the day I'm gonna make you my wife' and 'on our wedding day' and the chorus includes 'never really wished on a star', It sounds like a black male group from 70's or 80's.
Can anyone help please - its driving me mad.

No dude they are not a black group. It is actually Regis Philbin and Bob Barker back in the 70's when they were known as Stone Groove.
