Is not a mental illness no different from any other medical condition in that it requires a treatment method just like say diabetes or a heart condition and that while they can be treated easily as pills they aren't contagious

It depends on the person and the illness. Case in point, I knew a friend of my brother who was a pedophile/had trouble with illegal thoughts. When I learned this I tried to made sure my niece always had someone else who could watch her, so that both she and he would not be at risk. Had I ever heard he had acted on his mental problem, I would have called the police. It is the same as when I learn someone has trouble with Alcoholism. I would not want to put that person in the situation of being around a bunch of drinking.

Recently I went on disability for insanity/schizophrenia. I was surprised at the reactions of people around me. The only real change was some people, my brothers among others, started assuming I was stupid. That hurt. I try to always treat people the way I want to be treated. If someone I know reveals a mental imbalance, I try to love them the same, and hope that they get the help they need.

Not necessarily. I love the answer that says some mentally ill people are more intelligent than the so-called sane. Just because you're mentally ill, doesn't make you 'insane'. There are so many varying degrees of illness - some can't be treated with pills, some need long-term therapy, and even then people might still struggle some days. With diseases like Alzheimers and such, it's difficult to treat sufferers as you would a healthy person - you have to adapt your behaviour. For example, my great aunty has it and she repeats things over and over because she doesn't know she's told you. You have to react each time, you can't just say 'you told me that...' because it might upset her.

People treat everyone differently anyway - I don't treat one person the same as every other, regardless of illness. It's just about being sensitive and acknowledging that they might be suffering - it's just that with mental illness, the suffering isn't necessarily as obvious as it might be with a physical illness.

I find it extremely painful to see people going through this because Mental illnesses are much more paiful than the physical ones.So I try to be more understanding and try NOT to take things so personally !!

No, I empathsize 100%, not only have I worked with mentally ill people, I have been one myself. I haven't felt that anyone has treated me any differently, but I have seen some clients whose family members treat them with a condescending attitude, like they are uncapable of making any choices or decisions, and that is quite sad!

you've fairly a lot hit the nail of the properly. human beings are afraid because they do no longer recognize what is going on. See my mom is bipolar as well, my acquaintances attempt to comprehend yet in view that they lack the understanding they fairly do no longer recognize what's occurring. Your no longer stupid so do not imagine that, purely because you've a psychological ailment does no longer advise your no longer smart.

My brother is Schizo-Effective and Bi-polar.
He is still the same jerk he always was...but now he gets a crazy check, an apartment, medical insurance and food stamps from the Government so he can stay Peter Pan forever.

Really depends.

I would not change my behavior towards them, but I would become more tolerable of any "different" actions.

Friends are friends, family is family.

Nothing should hurt that.
