Hey Simone...I'm a South African & what crime strategy are you talking about.....is this a new thing that Mbeki's come up with....when was it launched....why are the public not aware of this....doesn't everyone know that if you walk the streets in South Africa you MUST have at least 3 armed bodyguards with you at all times...that is how all the councillors, politicians, stars, etc get from place A to B.....
Or are you talking about the fact that the police are gagged from releasing the real crime statistics....the prevention of disclosure of crime!!!!

Having just returned from SA after my first visit - my answer would be....Every house is alarmed and seemed to be monitered through to a response team. I am amazed to say the least that each house was covered by security as mentioned plus electric gates. It did not seem very inviting to a neighbour to nip around to see somebody without first phoning I would imagine. Downtown there were undercover police who would quickly don a jacket if they needed to arrest somebody.

Night times were a different story, you could NOT go out for a stroll in suberbs or coastline without having somebody with you for sure.

In time to come this may decrease but at present I felt very vunerable both day and night to be honest.

So on closing perhaps we should do as they do and become more security wise in our homes (so many are not at present) and streetwise I do not think that there policies are better than ours, infact slightly less.
