My apartment is super-stuffy. . . but I've heard that humidifiers can make me sick, because they drive bacteria into the air even when they're clean. Any advice on which is the best type to buy? Any other opinions on what can add moisture to my apartment? Thanks.

Yeah, it's freezing outside, and tomorrow it's going to snow. Opening the window will only make the heat go on, which in turn will make the apartment even stuffier.

Actually, cool mist humidifiers CAN disperse dangerous microorganisms throughout a home. Please don't answer unless you actually know what you're talking about.

During the winter months it is important to have a humidifier. The constant dry air is bad for your skin mucous membranes etc,and can actually make the hoime feel colder. Pots of water laying around the house are not sufficient to add the right amount of humidity that is being consumed by the dry heat from the furnace. For an apartment a small humidifier should work well. They sell bacteriostats to put in the water , Make sure to add the bateria killer everytime you refill the humidifier's tank. There are many good brands out there. Sumbeam, Westinghouse, Honeywell to name a few. Check consumer reports if you want to hear how people are rating them.

Is your apartment stuffy because the temperature is too high ..... or is the moisture content in the air too high already ?
Normally, dry air would not feel stuffy unless the temp is too high. Is there a way to reduce the temp ? Is your apartment near a furnace .... or chimney .... or washroom ? Make sure dangerous or unhealthy vapors or gases are not venting to your apartment.
As others have commented .... the cool mist humidifers work best.
You may need more ventilation but you wouldn't want to throw heat out the window ...... maybe you need a humidity guage ..... along with an accurate thermometer and ...... measure the range that feels the most comfortable to you.

The cool mist idea is the best kind for you. In addition, animals, plants, and aquariums all add moisture to your home. Warm air can hold more moisture than cold air, so bump up the temp a little bit.
Other tiny ways to add moisture:
Leave the lids off of the pots when cooking.
Don't turn on the bathroom fan when showering.
Air dry clothes in your apartment.

I would personally deal with the stuffyness. Humidifiers cause mold. and I dont think the owner of the apartment would appriciate have to remodel a couple apartments due to one humidifier blowing moisture into the air.I currently have a ex-tennant who unscrewed the dryer vent and was running two humidifiers in a duplex. His repair costs for negligent damage is close to $20,000.00

Buy a cool mist humidifier. Keep the tanks clean by rinsing with bleach water. You shouldn't have any problem with bacteria. Holmes is the best brand and if you decide not to buy one, place bowls of water around and just keep replenishing the water.

Leave some pots/containers of water around the apartment. Refill as needed. Works for me.

Boil a pot of beans, they are not only good for you but the steam fills the room with a nice order and invite friends over to eat pinto beans and bake some corn bread, have a party.
