I don't think that I actually came to that realization until I lived by myself...not with my parents, not with my ex - but when I finally moved to an apartment by myself a year and a half ago...when I had to pay all bills myself and on time, do things for me, being comfortable being by myself...I even too a vacation for the first time entirely by myself. That was when i realized that I had finally reached adulthood...when I could no longer live totally carefree and finally start paying bills, maintaining my own place, making smarter decisions, etc. Not only that, but becoming an adult and doing all those things finally allowed me to meet the love of my life...I was finally at a point where I was ready, I was mature enough, and I was comfortable being alone to finally be with someone else worthy of me.

btw...I'm just a few months shy of 34.

I believe that most children and adolescents think that they know everything. They are unable to see that they really have no insight into situations. They believe that they are invincible and capable of great things (which is endearing but false!). They also have nothing to compare their situations to which leaves them naive. Their parents are usually around to fall back on and they do that until they decide they are old enough to get through any given situation on their own which is where they "real" learning takes place. This is where the slow transition from childhood to adulthood takes place.
I don't think I have fully reached adulthood yet at age 30. If I could potentially live till age 70, I think it is naive of me to think that I am an adult when I have not even lived half my life at this point. I think I am mature enough to conduct myself as an adult and do adult "things" but I still have not had the real-life experiences of a full fledged adult. I'm getting there but I'm not totally there yet! That being said, I realized I was on my way to becoming an adult when I realized that I did NOT "know it all," I will never "know it all" nor do I want to "know it all."

When I found out I was pregnant, at 17... and my hopes for college were slipping away. I had to make some huge decisions. I graduated high school, had my son, and by the grace of God went on to college, and got my Masters. My son is 35 now, and grew up to be a man any mother could be proud of. I am so blessed!

I'm not an adult yet, but I'm mature enough to be one.(especially compared to the adults I know) If you think what I said in the parentheses is mean, you haven't met the adults I know.
