Hi all,

I want to know the effects that a broken/cracked exhaust pipe of a car has on the engine apart from the big noises and pops. Does if cause some kind of damage to the engine system?

Thanks for ur answers

Following your very informative answers, apart the first one from booge :) I would like to add these details to my question.

My car is a RENAULT 19 Chamade year 1994 with a semi injection engine and running on GPL. The crack on the exhaust tube is located at the back side and no fumes gets into the car. The solution that someone provided somewhere below about using worm clamps is very interesting. Keep adding.

Thank u all

Can't think of any perm damage that could be caused by a broken exhaust pipe. You may see that your car idles rough, epsecially sinc you said it pops. I would get it fixed, because depending on the crack you could allow carbon monoxide to leak into your car.

Depending where its broken, as long as its after the O2 sensors then no real harm. If you live in a very cold environment its possible that when you shut your engine off cold air can more easily flow back up the pipe and cause a really hot exhaust valve to break or crack, that normally only happens when someone runs open headers in the winter..So I really would worry about it much. Besides it makes you feel like your driving way faster!

In addition to the answers above, one easy repair that I've used might work for you depending on where the crack is. You can position stainless steel worm drive hose clamps over the hole or crack in the pipe and tighten them up to seal the crack. You can use a folded piece of aluminum foil under the clamps to extend the area to be sealed. Home centers also sell light weight aluminum coils used in roofing that add some strength if wrapped around the pipe before clamping. A home center also has much bigger diameter stainless steel worm drive clamps used to seal rubber adapters to plumbing pipes. If you daisy chain the clamps together, you can actually tighten them around the muffler body to seal exhaust leaks also.

A best designed silencer absorbs 10% of Break House Power therefore if it get ruptured the engine efficiency increases but it is noisy .Sure there is no damage to engine and you vehicle will run faster too. If you remove the exhaust you get 10% more Hoese power.

It can depending on the type of car and where the crack is. On newer cars(96 and newer, obd II cars) they require some amount of back pressure and if the crack is in front of the catalitic converter then it is something that you should get fixed. On older cars no engine damage will occur, also another concern though is that the exhaust of cars has carbon monoxide in it so if your sitting in traffic idling then you can get carbon monoxide in the car.

if youre broke you can put a pop can over the crack
and use ) clamps to put it on, aluminum furnace tape to put on the edge of the can and done, no more leak.
The alternative can very well be death. in any year vehicle.
unless its the muffler or the 10 inches or so before it, fix it
your life CAN be depending on it.
