America doesn't what to "conquer the world" - It is simply the age old political tactic of diverting people's attention - avoid tackling internal problems (and admitting that you have more people below the poverty line than some 3rd world countries) by fixating the population on an external problem such as Iraq, Afghanistan etc. It's a good way of strengthen an individuals political standing.
Also, war/military action stimulates an economy to an extent too.
This tactic has been used by many politicians throughout the whole of history to divert a populous attention from the real issues that affect them - a common example is "immigrants are taking all of your jobs..."; all countries rely on immigration to remain running but it gives your average joe what seems to be a tangible reason for their problems rather than the government of that country holding up their hands and saying "OK, we messed up".
