Airlines take even small kids (under 10) to flight unaccompanied, with a valid ticket. At booking time however they look into the situation (you have to call the airline for the booking, no on-line purchasing is possible), and when you check in they allocate a person to ensure that the minor is taken care of, and that someone is directly responsible for the kid, they verify the passport and if needed parental consent delivered to a third person.

For the passport, you need full parental consent and signature, in some cases from both parents.

you can trave lalone before the age of 18. My friends father lives in New Zealand and when we were young, he used to travel out there alone during school holidays. he would have only been young (less than16). As has been said already, you just need a valid return ticket and passport with 6 months left on it. It wouldn't be cricket to go overseas without informing your parents though! so make sure you get their permission!!

Its not at the airport that you show the consent, its booking the fight/holiday within the travel agents.

And i guess a parent/guardian would be taking you to the airport, so they can certify that they give consent for you to travel in person

It's not a question of consent - if under the age of 13 years (UK), but can be younger if the airline is given prior notice, it's whether you are accompanied.

Children are usually accompanied by an adult,

The people at the airport don't care how old you are as long as you have a valid ticket.

you cannot travel alone until you are 18 years old...and then you don't need their permission.
