today is the difference in how children treat and respect their parents? If so could formal discipline be the difference i.e. children a hundred years ago were spanked and were contributing members of the household and now they seem to be protected to the point of mollycoddling in that they do not have to do many chores, money is freely given and respect for elders ahs all but disappeared.

Mom, do you have to air our dirty laundry like this in such a passive - agressive way?

basic humane rights and technology are the big differences.

The emotional "need" to be respected did not excist. Both children and adults worked for their own exsistance, a home was a treasured thing, and a luxury to have breakfast, lunch and dinner was a several hours process (each).

I think that "society" as a whole has become more "self" oriented, it was very common for the entire family (multi generations) lived together to help the entire "unit" function. The Villiage mentality was a reality.

To prove my point "log" a week of activity and how many times an hour are you in contact with the family unit- who watches the children and whom do you cook for and how many?

AMEN!!! i think as a society we have grown to believe that being "mean" to our children by spanking, or disciplining them in any way hinders them somehow....apparently scolding your children makes them feel bad about themselves, and causes them to suffer from mental anguish...WHATEVER! this is the reason we have TV shows like supernanny...because of the simple fact that parents are letting their children make the rules, and respect for elders has gone out the door! too bad we cant go back to the way things used to be!

Society has changed altogether, kids can practically get away with anything now because parents have let children talk to them anyway they want to.
