If there is not enough matter in the universe, it will continue to expand. If there is, then it is destined to collapse upon itself. What if that's where were headed instead of currently expanding? This would also explain the red shift, would it not?

No, it would not be a red shift if the universe were contracting. The shift is caused by the Doppler effect. As the source of waves move away from a point their frequency is slowed, shifting down the spectrum. As it moves towards the point the frequency is increased, moving up Visible light is ROYGBIV (Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet), if the universe were contracting we would observe a violet shift.

All data supports the fact that the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate. Sorry .. there's not going to be a big crunch.
